School Story:

My memories of high school are almost all positive. Would I do some things differently if I had the chance? Only a fool would say no to that, but all in all life has been very good. My greatest rewards at Ashley came from being in the band - playing the trumpet - something I carried with me most of my life. I seemed to have been defined by my classmates for my trumpet playing ability. I had great joy playing in the Ashley marching band and concert band. At Duke I played in the marching band, concert band, orchestra, Navy ROTC Band and the Pep Band - which originated the "Cameron Crazies." Later, while stationed at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana, I was part of a Jazz - and Dixieland Band. We played regular bar and restaurant venues on almost every weekend. It was a great source of extra income. The group was usually five or six members but we came from all over. Our piano player, Bob Rowe, was from Monroe Louisiana - but so very talented, he could support with the piano and play a cornet harmonizing with me on the trumpet. He was incredibly talented. Our trombone player was a CPA from Milwaukee. Our baritone sax player was from Maine, our drummer was from the Chicago area. We often switched instruments. The sax player naturally played a clarinet. I sometimes would play the drums. The trombone player could play just about any instrument. It was such great fun mixing it up like we did. We would travel to Chicago on weekends to play, but to also go to the late night clubs and listen to the real professionals - and guys we got to know - Dave Brubeck, Maynard Ferguson, Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown - just to name a few. After leaving the Army, I continued playing "Taps" for military funerals all over the southeast. Music is still part of my life even though I can't play the trumpet anymore. Cancer took the muscle out of my lower lip when I was about 65. I miss it - but have moved on.

Getting this information was a bit more difficult that one might expect, but it seems that Libby was intent on

her life private.  I knew her very well from third grade on up to attending Duke University.  I remember when many of us took dancing lessons at Durham School of Dance, that whenever a waltz came up, I chose Libby as my dance partner.  She was extremely talented in many ways, especially in music.  I marveled at her piano and voice.  She was inately beautiful.  A highly intelligent person who graduated from Duke with honors.

Happy birthday, John. Now you are an old codger just like me. However, it's better than being "under the grass," an expression Bill Forbes likes to use. We all hope this message finds you well and happy.
