Carl "Buddy" Lewis, Jr.
November 27, 1938 - April 29, 2023
Columbia, South Carolina - Carl Marvin "Buddy" Lewis, Jr. of Columbia, SC passed away April 29, 2023, at the age of 84.
Buddy is survived by his wife, Emily W. Lewis, his daughter, Carmen Joan Lewis Carter, his son Eric Carl Lewis, his grandsons Wellington Goddin, III and Nicholas Taylor Lewis, his sister, Susan Lewis Hayworth, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, JoAnn Rockett Lewis, parents Carl Marvin Lewis and Nettie Styers Lewis, his sister Rebecca Lewis Gardner, and niece Michelle Gardner.
Born November 27,1938, in Gastonia, NC, Buddy was known for his deep love of family and friends, his faith in the Lord, and his alma mater, Clemson University, where he graduated as a distinguished Military Graduate in 1961. Buddy served on active duty before joining the Army Reserves, where he served until 1984, retiring as Lieutenant Colonel with the 360th Civil Affairs Unit.
Buddy's accomplishments were numerous, starting at Clemson University in Agricultural Economics, he was a member of the Scabbard and Blade, and Numeral Society, and the YMCA Council. He proudly was an Eagle Scout and was very involved in civic committees, such as fundraising for the Boy Scouts of America and Clemson University.
He served as President of the Wildewood Homeowners Assoc. and chaired numerous committees in his church. Buddy was also the author of four real estate and travel books. He established the Buddy Lewis Student Enhancement Endowment at Clemson, was a member of the Tillman Society, and served on the Clemson Board of Visitors.
Buddy was a highly respected figure in the real estate industry, serving as President of the Board of Realtors and earning numerous sales and citizenship awards at Coldwell Banker and Russell & Jeffcoat Realtors. He was a lifetime member of the Million Dollar Club and was recognized as Realtor of the Year in 1991. Buddy's first career was as District Manager of USS Agri-Chemicals in Columbia.
Buddy will be deeply missed and remembered fondly by all who knew him. Visitation Sunday, May 7, from 5-7 pm at Shives Funeral Home, 7600 Trenholm Road; funeral Monday, May 8 at 12 p.m. at St. Andrews Lutheran Church, 1416 Broad River Road. Interment to be held at St. Andrews Lutheran Cemetery, 421 St. Andrews Road. In lieu of flowers please consider a memorial to the Alzheimer's Association, St. Andrews Lutheran Church, or the Boy Scouts of America.
