George Macaire Mason Obituary

George Macaire Mason, 84, of Dallas, passed away Friday, May 10, 2024 at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. He was born September 17, 1939 in Gaston County, North Carolina, son of the late Richard Harrison "Dick" Mason Sr. and Hazel Ewbank Mason.  

George grew up in and around the family business, Dick Mason Lumber Company, and attended the National Hardwood Lumber School.  He was also a proud graduate of Belmont Abbey College. After the sale of the family business, he began a career in Real Estate, serving as a Realtor, Property Manager, and Appraiser.  In addition, George served on the Gaston County Board of Equalization and Review and the Gaston County Board of Adjustment.  George enjoyed hunting, fishing, and waterfowl carving, and, in his younger years, was an avid golfer and water-skier.  He had a passion for conservation and was active in the local chapters of Ducks Unlimited, Quail Unlimited, the National Wild Turkey Federation and Piedmont Area Wildlife Stewards (PAWS).

Those left to cherish George's memory include his Wife, Mary Cox "Tippy" Mason; Children, Kathy M. Gallman (Charles) and Suzie M. Whatley (Michael), both of Gastonia; Sisters, Hazel M. "Pug" Giles of Glenville, NC and Lynn M. Dennis (Terry) of Lakeland, FL; Sister-in-law, Callie O. Mason of High Point, NC; Grandchildren, Will Gallman (Haley) of Dell Rapids, SD, Mac Gallman, Michael Whatley, George Whatley and Mary Kate Whatley, all of Gastonia.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Harrison "Dick" Mason, Jr.

        The family will greet guests from 5:30 until 7:30 pm on Wednesday, May 15, 2024 at McLean Funeral Directors, 700 S. New Hope Road, Gastonia.

A private family service will be held at the columbarium at First Presbyterian Church, Gastonia.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials in memory of George be made to PAWS (3575 Bryantcole Way, Gastonia, NC 28056) or any other conservation organization of your choice.
