Ed lived two miles as the crow flies from me down Union Road. We became good buddies in the Boy Scouts and were good friends in school. He and I and Lee Poole, Jerry Warren, Don McGinnis and others were friends, classmates, and attended school together. Ed was always a loyal friend and loved the Lord. There are too many funny stories, sad stories, and good stories never bad to even begin to tell. I joined the Navy just out of high school. Thrree months later i was sent to Imperial Beach California for Communication Technicial School. I received a letter that he had joined the Navy and would do Boot Camp in San Diego 15 miles from Imperial Beach. Of course we visited after he finishced 7th week brigade which is when new recruits can have visitation. ONe of my fondest and funniest  memories of Ed happened this way:

My mom worked on the first shift and did not like me to go hunting by myself. I was 15. Dad was home about two oclock from a golf match so i asked him cooule i take the dogs and go quaill hunting. He said yes and handed me the 20 gauge shot gun. "When will you be back son", dad asked. "Well it's Scout Meeting night so before six i guess"

Needless to say 15 yeaar old boys with his dogs and shotgun pay no attention to time. I had three birds when i realized that i have walked all the way to Ed's house. He said "man yoiu are gonna be late for Scouts"

Oh my, instead of going home i'll just ride with you and your dad".

Dad's not here. We'll have to walk. We better hustle". So we walked the mile and a half to Sandy Plains Baptist Church where we found no one except the preacher. He said "Gene, half the county's out looking for you. Lila came and said you went hunting and was supposed to be back for Scouts. She said she heard two gunshots. She thinks you shot yourself some kind of way".

Ed and I ran down to my house where all the Scouts had gone with flashlights and lantern out looking for me. As soon as Mother saw me shi yelled "Boy, I'm gonna kill yoiu". Mothers are like that.I love Ed Gray and will miss him sincerely. God rest his weary soul. Gene Davis

I didn't see anything about Civil Air Patrol. Ed was a Captain if i'm not mistaken. He tried to do Scouts and Civil Air Patrol but a little too much to keep up with both so he chose te Patrol. Gene
