Sally Wyly (Long)

Sally Wyly Long, age 81, of Marion, North Carolina, passed away on Wednesday, September 02, 2020 at her residence with her loving family at her side.  A native of Gaston County, North Carolina, she was born on August 13, 1939 and was the daughter of the late Estelle Wilkerson Wyly. 

 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Wilson Long (2011); and one sister, Ann Wyly.

 

Sally was a member of First United Methodist Church of Marion. Sally began her musical career at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music where she developed her talents as a singer and pianist.  She was a performer in many organizations, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Her love of music and her faith led her to Music Ministry.  She served over 30 years as the director of music for the Mount Vernon Place United Methodist Church, in Washington, D.C..  Her service included operas and musicals, orchestra performances, bell choirs, and the Sanctuary Choir. Also, Sally enjoyed directing and traveling with the Chinese Oratorio Society. During her time in Washington, D.C., she and her husband Michael raised a daughter, started and ran both a successful catering business (Michael’s Caterers) and a Florist (Michael’s Flowers). They enjoyed having friends to their home for lavish dinner parties where they showcased their talents in the kitchen.  They both were deeply involved in their church and service to the Lord.

After her husband's death and her retirement from Mount Vernon, she continued her ministry at Providence United Methodist Church before choosing to move to the wonderful community that is Marion, North Carolina.  In Marion, she joined the First United Methodist Church of Marion where she was a member of the bell choir.  She also enjoyed playing the piano at Story Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Sally will be remembered in love by many people in many communities.

 

She is survived by one daughter, Mary Long Middleton and her husband, Michael; one grandson, Woodrow Middleton; and a brother-in-law, Tony Long and his wife, Nancy and their children, Jennifer Blake and David Long.
